In ancient times, people were afraid of many things. The vastness of a dark sky was feared, as were storms, the changes in the moon, earthquakes and eclipses. The blue represents the sky, the white represents the moon, yellow represents the sun disk and the black is a little bit of evil trying to cover the light. The evil eye bead evolved as a talisman to ward off the evil eye, jealousy, envy, bad thoughts, and to bounce curses back.

Evil eye beads remain ubiquitous in Turkey.

This is the column in the middle of Bergama’s Cistern. (Bergama is Turkish for Pergamum.) You can see the coins several people landed on the column, earning them their dearest wish. Both Bobbie and I were forunate to land our coins.

Column at Pergamum

This year, I wore my sunglasses on a braided leather lanyard, and they didn’t fall. However, it was windy at the top of Bergama and my hat slipped its chin strap and went sailing down towards the Amphitheater. There was a group of tourists down below us, and a young man grabbed it when it landed on their level. He waited until we came down. I was grateful.

Last year, I landed my coin and was so pleased that I looked down into the bottom of the cistern, causing my perfect sunglasses to slip from the brim of my hat and land at the bottom. They were retrieved in exchange for a $20 bill.
