Turkey Tour 2006
Cappadocia Ceramics

Our last stop before arriving at our hotel was a 200-year-old ceramic factory carved into the hillside. The tiles and pottery were of a very high quality, and we saw the workshops and displays in the caves and tunnels.

Anita Potter

A famous potter demonstrated the making of a teapot then asked for a volunteer to make a matching sugar bowl. The only one to volunteer, I had to remove my long sleeved shirt, watch and ring, then don a pair of protective pants before sitting at the potter’s wheel. I gave it my best try, and followed his instructions. I think he was having fun with me because he had me shape it into a Priapus-sized phallus before telling me to poke a hole in the top and work it down into a bowl-shape. As a reward for my efforts, my hands and forearms were covered with terra cotta clay.

Anita's Tile

I bought this tile, which has rock crystal in the glaze, making the color glow. They will frame and ship it home to me.
