Susan Peters (McAvoy)

LEBANON -- Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, Nov. 1 at Ligon & Bobo Funeral Home for Mrs. McAvoy, 61, of Hartsville.

She passed away Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, at the Lebanon Health & Rehab.

Born in Warren, Ohio, she was the third child of the late Harry W. and Patricia Ann Cox Peters Jr. She attended Cairo American College in Maadi Egypt, and graduated from George C. Regional High School in Ankara, Turkey.

She studied at Roberts College in Istanbul. On returning to the United States, she earned her BA at Thomas Moore College in Kentucky, then her Masters in Counseling from the University of Houston.

Mrs. McAvoy worked as a vocational specialist for Prospect Inc. from 1989 to 1994 and then served in many capacities for the next 20 years.

She was a member of the Margaret Gaston Chapter of the DAR and served as registrar and as a volunteer in the Descendants Project, receiving an award for her work in 2010.

She also volunteered in the American Eskimo Rescue Society and was a communicant of St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church.

Services were conducted by Father Michael O’Bryan. Private interment followed at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include: husband Frank Joseph McAvoy Jr.; and son, Frank J. McAvoy III of Murfreesboro and Patrick O’Brian McAvoy of Hartsville.

Also surviving are siblings Cynthia Louise Peters of Lebanon; Julia Ann Peters (Lane R.) Goldstein of Calabasas, Calif.; and Michael A. (Lynn) Peters of Prescott, Ariz.; nieces Dolly and Rosie; nephew Nathanial M. Kuhn; along with other nieces and nephews.

Ligon & Bobo Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
