After visiting Ataturk’s Mausoleum, we were received by Ambassador Ross Wilson’s wife, Margo Squire at their residence. Margo gave us a tour of the Residence, then served us coffee, tea, juice and snacks in the garden.

Ankara has changed into a thriving metropolis with a population over seven million and the accompanying traffic jams. You hear the Call to Prayer, but the sound of the Bekci’s whistle is no more. These two photographs are blurry, which is appropriate because I was seeing the old structures when these faded into view. |
Old Maltepe Location Our hotel was just down the street from he old Purple Pit. It is now a small square with a taxi kiosk on the corner and sits across from a metro station. My house in Bacilievler is now an apartment building, part of a row of many apartment building. But the old Riding Club is still there! The Kara Deniz swimming pool is now a cemetery for VIPs. I saw the Ankara Palas, and the Embassy still stands on Ataturk Caddesi, and the Residence is still up the hill. |
Officer's Mall The Officer’s Club on Çankaya Hill is now a modern shopping mall topped by a space needle with a rotating restaurant. |
