Turkey Tour 2006
Green Mosque, Bursa
On to Bursa in the morning, where we stopped for lunch at a restaurant high on a hill which specialized in Iskender Kebab—doner kebab on top of freshly baked pide bread, smothered in tomato sauce and yoghurt, then topped with melted butter. We enjoyed the view of Bursa from the windows as we waited for our sizzling melted butter that the waiter drizzled over each serving. |
Our first visit to a mosque was the Green Mosque in Bursa, built to accompany the tomb of Sultan Mehmet I. You will notice that we showed proper respect by removing our shoes, donning skirts to cover exposed legs and scarves to cover our hair. Jerry Moran; Barb Scott; |
The fountain in this 1399 mosque has a story. The Sultan declared he would build a mosque in this location, but the spot where this fountain flows was the property of a Jew. His condition to give up the land was that no one pray on the spot where his property was located. The solution was to place thisbeautiful fountain inside the mosque over the Jew’s property. |
Candy Man of Bursa In the park between the mosque and the tomb, we watched a young man in a mirrored vest selling candy to the children. He dipped a stick into colored syrup arranged in segments on his tray. When the stick was full of the syrup, the Candy Man would rub it on a lemon half before handing it to the eager customer. Sultan Mehmet Tomb These are many coffins in Sultan Mehmet I’s tomb. There was beautiful tile work everywhere, as you can see in this picture. |
