The silkworm cocoons
are in a vat of warm water to soften them. The young man has just
stirred them with a whiskbroom. The cocoons stick to the whiskbroom
and he takes a few threads, strings them through hooks, and they
are unraveled into skeins of thread.
Looms are set up in
the courtyard where women come from nearby villages to learn to
weave rugs. This gives them a livelihood and the purchase money
from their rugs goes straight to them rather than to the family.
The group saw an amazing
display of rugs and were served apple tea. Salesmen rolled out
the rugs as Arthur explained the weaving techniques and regional
patterns and use of color for each one.
