Living in Turkey was a truly unique experience. My Dad was USAF attached to TUSLOG. We lived in Bachi. I remember hiking across "Sugar Creek" (open sewer) and up the hill to visit Attaturk's Tomb. We lived in a 3rd floor apartment. I remember riding out a scary earthquake. I don't think the Turks had much in the way of building codes in those days. About half of the other families were with the oil companies. This is an amazing site! Kudos to those who developed and maintain it! Name: Stephanie Faulkner Comments: I attended AAEA from 54 to 58 - age 7 to 11. I only recall a few of my classmates - Billy Dickenson in particular, and Sheila Smith. We lived in the apartments across from the French Embassy and at that time we could walk to school. My folks took many photos back then and there are some wonderful ones of the High School events and at least one graduation. What a wonderful time to be in that country! Many years later I graduated from HS in Athens at ACS. Looking to reconnect with old Brownies, kids that lived close etc. Name: Richard Crawford [Rich] Comments: Attended from spring '63 to spring '64.... Was one of the Site 23 gang.... Name: Andy Ginn I'm interested in others that graduated in 1976. I would also like to se(e) pictures of the school now. Thank you. Name: Alexa Enfield Comments: I did not attend Ankara High School, but some of my friends did - Bruce Hall and possibly Wallace Hall. I remember going to the Officer's Club on base, having turkey sandwiches and Shirley Temples, and dancing the Bunny Hop and the Hokey Pokey! I attended the English High School For Girls (EHSG) in 1959, and later a French Embassy school in Ankara in the mid 1960s. If anyone has any information on the Tumpane company or either of the schools that I mentioned, it would be much appreciated. I would like to connect with others who lived in Turkey in this time frame and reminisce about those wonderful days. (If anyone knew Bruce Hall, a Debbie Olsen or a Cathy Garvin, please let me know). Name: Wallace Hall Comments: Greetings, fellow Trojans. I have an unusual request. Due to a traumatic brain injury (or two) my long term memory has been severely affected. I remember faces and places, but not names or dates. I would like to ask that if any of you remember me, to please email me. Let me know how we knew each other, what kind of things we did, and what trouble we did/didn't get into. I know I lived on Serefli Sokak in Mebusevleri between 1960 and 1965 while I was in elementary school, then I came back in 1967/69 and I lived in the dorm. I have very few memories of dorm life or school and would love to know what the heck I did back then :). I hope I hear from you. Gule gule for now. Debbie (Waltman) Rickman, '69, has been unable to work the past six months due to medical reasons. She worked at Jack in the Box for 17 years, so she does not have any savings, and she lives alone. She has been going through government red tape trying to get disability but has received nothing to date. She has been unable to pay her mortgage payments on her mobile home and her phone service has been cut off. I sent her money a few times to help her out and to get her utilities up to date so they wouldn't be cut off, but I can't continue due to my own economic situation (my hours have just been cut at my work). If you can spare a few bucks to help one of our own, I would be so grateful as I am worried about her welfare. She was my best friend when we lived on Site 23 and is a good person at heart. These days it seems like its the community we can count on to help each other, not the government. So, if you can send even a small amount, every little bit will help! Or, if you can donate your legal services somehow to help her get her disability, that would be wonderful as well. She lives outside of Houston. Went to Balgat in August. Of course many know how small the American corner is, but it is still suprising to see it, especially since I was 16 last time I was there. New GC Marshall School principle was too busy to let alumni in the building or library. She had "60 kids coming in of all grades". I remember Dr. Elstran. He would have had this lady for breakfast. Gym is still there intact. Remember ASTL basketball? The High School is now the AAFES BX. The old track is getting rdone and the football field is...for Soccer. Trojans don't even have a football team anymore. Most student are international community. Bleachers are still there, and Mrs. Brown's old music room is still the music room. CommentsThanks, Anita, for the outstanding job on your trip to Turkey and sharing it with all of us. My husband and I and 7 others toured almost all the places you did last year. You took some great pix from spots we didn't get or that didn't turn out well and I printed many of them. You made me feel I was on the tour again, but with your group. I was the "volunteer" at the ceramic place in Cappadocia and was laughing too hard to be embarrassed about the shape that seems to naturally form in the clay when on has no experience. We also bought a gorgeous plate and got a picture of us with the plate and the artist. He was leaving the next day for an exhibition in Chicago and is rated one Turkey's best ceramic artists. I'd make the trip again in a heartbeat Has anyone sailed on a Gulet from Bodrum down into the southwestern part of the Aegean?
CommentsJust had to stop by and comment what a wonderful job you and Anita have done with the Turkey Tour pictures - it has been a really neat thing to feel like I got to go along in some way - seeing the pictures of Ms. Ulku and Mr. Tickfer was really great. Kudos - you are the best, thanks for everything you do to keep us all "connected!"

CommentsI attended 4-6th grade at the elementary school in 80-82. Do you ever get requests for adresses for the younger crowd?
CommentsI missed out!I want to thank all who posted pictures and have updated me. Special sincere gratitude goes out to all you make things happen and care enough to keep in touch. Life is not much without friends and memories. Ankara,Turkey and the many who passed through have a special place in time and in each others hearts. Fondly, Cindy Smith
CommentsI am not an alum of Ankara High School but knew many of the students when I was stationed in Ankara between 1953 and l955, including Sally Stermer, Sandy Shaver, and Patsy Gibbons. My compliments to them all.
CommentsJill, I must remark what a great job you are doing putting up all this information for everyone about the disaster. I'm sure many have already found it very helpful in this emergency. I find it rich with letters from our friends, agencies to contact, and links to news and donation opportunities. I'm happy to be able to refer e-Citadel visitors to this site as I know there is so much here that is helpful. You've provided a lot of resources in a short time and it's very much appreciated - kudos!
CommentsI attended school in Incirlik but my late wife, Belinda Frost, graduated from Ankara in 1969. I attended the 2005 reunion to provide some closure for her friends. I know I didn't get to see all of you but rest assured that you were on my mind. I want to thank those that encouraged me to attend. It was difficult at times but I'm glad I came. Thanks to Gary Kunselman for the time to talk about Belinda and to Tim Wurtz and the committee for putting on another great reunion.
CommentsThe reunion in Dallas was the first one I have attended and I loved every minute of it. Only one thing missing: Does anyone know what happened to Kathie Kajimura??
CommentsAnita, Great getting a chance to meet you in Dallas and putting faces behind a few of the names who have done so much to unite this most unique community. Too many to list but my thanks to all. Enjoyed Mike's photos of his visit to the ranch. Wayne
CommentsI had a great time while in Turkey and I have vivid memories of the fun I had playing Basketball for the varsity team. We even played a tourniment in Beirut, Lebanon!
CommentsHi! I traveled to Turkey with my USAF family on the USNS Geiger in Oct. 1959, a wonderful 19-day experience (not counting the seasickness and fact that the captain of the ship died of a coronary enroute and was buried at sea). Attending the Ankara American school from 1959-'62 created great friendships that I'd love to reestablish, and living as a BRAT on the Turkish "economy" was an educational and social experience I'd never trade for any amount of money! When my husband and I traveled to Istanbul from his USArmy station in Landstuhl, (then West) Germany many years later, the Turks there were impressed when I still tried to speak my microscopic amount of "kitchen Turkish." Hey, anyone out there--Hope Chalfant, John Willis, John Baleski, Donna Blatt, Kathleen Crowley, others? I'd love to hear from any and all of you!
CommentsWish I could be at the reunion, would love to see everyone. Have fun and I'll look forward to seeing pictures of everyone. Wendy
CommentsTo My Dear Ankara Friends: I will miss you all at the reunion! I have been looking forward to seeing everyone again ever since the last one! I had the time of my life reconnecting with people I never dreamed I would see again - especially after 32 years! My stepson and his family will be coming from California the same weekend. I will be thinking of you all, and certainly with you in spirit- have a dance for me! Lots of love, Ginny

CommentsGolly...glancing at the guestbook made this visitor feel her age..OLD..guess I can actually have the rest of you asking me what going to school in Ankara was like in the OLDEN DAYS! Hope to see where some of my classmates have visited here, we are all so lucky to have this available to us....MANY THANKS to each one of you who make it possible.
CommentsSo glad to be able to say hello to EVERYONE. I made the 1st re-union and don't know if I'll be able to make 2005. Sylvia Rogers, out there, you and I briefly spoke a few months ago with I was out of town and lost your number...can anyone help? Thank you Anita and Tim and ALL of you who have made these opportunities possible for us. Your "dormy" always, Caren Miller
CommentsThanks for all your hard work. Enjoyed reading about you Anita. What an interesting life. To those who have not attended a reunion before, you need to sign up for Dallas 2005. My first was Dallas 2000. It was a blast. It was like stepping back in time. It was unbelievable being with friends from 30 years back. I'm glad Tim Wurtz started the first web site years ago. I have enjoyed keeping in touch with several from the reunion as well as finding new ones. To Debbie Philips & Donna Ray congrats on your new marriages, but I lost your email addresses after that. Hope to hear from you and others. Jackie
CommentsAttended 3rd through 7th grade. Left Ankara in 1966. I have many, many fond memories of my school days there. Even the Turkish calvary swooping down the hill (full gallop) and across the elementary school grounds. I was totally in awe of the high school. So BIG...so many tall kids pushing me along the corridors.
CommentsGreat web site to visit.Thank you for all your hard work,it's nice to look back.
CommentsI want to thank Jill and all others who made this connetion possible. I will enjoy looking for old dormies and townies I schooled with. Please visit my DormLife web site listed above for some fun and laughs. Joel the Muse

Commentsanita, you've done a splendid web site! The Ankara guys are very fortunate. If Steve Palmerston or Steve Snyder ever appear, that would be great.
CommentsI was wondering if there is a special place for faculity? I have been attempting to locate a Mr. Steinburg who taught music in 61/62. I'm not even sure if he is still with us. He may have left Ankara and transferred to another school. I would like to hear from anyone who may have some information on him. Otherwise, great site, see you in Dallas this summer!
CommentsMe and Claude Davis are going to attend the reunion. We like to see as many people(Junior High & High school) as possible from 1977-1980 attend so we can catch up. I will be a great party, Come all ye
CommentsGreat job on the website Anita, Jill and John. I think that this is a great way for all of us that attend school in Ankara to get connected and stay connected.
CommentsI love the site, I was happy to see pictures of the school. It would be nice to have some year book photos of each class even if its only one or two per class but also it would be great to have a place for people to put up their own works. Thanks to this site, I can get in touch with a few but not all class mates. good job. I love the recent photos of the high school. Are there any of the base its self, Baskin Robins, Bookstore, Pool, Teen Center, they were nice memories too. -Carolina (Attended 1990-1992

CommentsThanks to all who worked so hard to put this site together.
CommentsWonderful pages!
CommentsThanks to all who have worked so hard to get these very special sites up and running. I wish I had the time and "know-how" you do!
CommentsThanks so much to all of you for creating this great site!
CommentsGuys, You have done a wonderful job on the sight. Thank you very much for giving us a place to come and feel "home". Best of luck on everything. Yvette
CommentsI am enjoying this site very much - it seems to address most if not all of what I'm looking for. Lots of current information and links to good newsgroups, photos, info about Turkey, finding things online for purchase that you didn't get while you were there, and the reunions (seems to include all of them - very cool), and nicely written. Thanks so much Jill - I know you hear all the time about "all your hard work" but it continues to be true and well-deserved! P.S. for others visiting the guestbook, report broken links including what page they're coming from and going to, to the webmistress using the "Contact the Webmistress" or "Contact Us" links elsewhere, probably on the front page of the site, so they can be repaired. (the webperson in me popping out) Shiela67
CommentsHow cool! I found a link showing how to get my puzzle ring back together that has been apart all of these years. We probably ought to list any and all great Turkish restaurants that we find. Thanks to a Turkish friend I had heard about the Istanbul Cafe (on Lover's Lane no less) which many have us have been to while at the reunion. Just went back there again about 3 weeks and enjoyed a fantastic dinner + Kavakladere Wine. You may find and sign our Guestbook here.
